Oregon Parks and Recreation
Evaluating the user experience for reserving a campsite in Oregon
Challenge
Oregon Parks and Recreation
The Oregon Parks and Recreation (OPRD) is a hub for all outdoor adventures in Oregon. Users can explore different campsites and make reservations using the state parks website.
Reservation System
Anthro-Tech worked with Oregon Parks and Recreation (OPRD) to assess the usability of the OPRD reservation system. We wanted to understand the pain points and interests of a wide variety of campers from all walks of life, and how the reservation could be improved to better meet campers' needs.
Solution
Creating site recommendations based on user feedback
I synthesized and analyzed data from all participants to create data-driven recommendations for improving the reservation experience for users. These recommendations including:
- Allow more advanced search filters to better accommodate campers' needs
- Include user-generated reviews to help campers make more informed decisions about which campsite to visit
- Create availability reminders and notifications to help remind campers of their upcoming camping adventure
Presenting study findings to client
I traveled to Redmond, Oregon, where I presented usability study findings at the Oregon Parks and Recreation core team conference.
My role
As the lead UX researcher at Anthro-Tech for the Oregon Parks and Recreation (OPRD) reservation system project, I designed, developed and conducted a remote baseline usability study for participants. I used the data to recommend data-driven solutions and recommendations focused on user-centered design principles. I created a PowerPoint presentation of the findings to present to the entire OPRD staff at their core team conference in Redmond, Oregon.
1Design and develop research plan
Plan based on critical user journeys when reserving a campsite through the OPRD website
2Conduct in-person usability study
Led 16 remote participants through the reservation process, noting their delights and pain points throughout the process
3Analyze data and create recommendations
Recommended data-driven solutions focused on user-centered design principles
